JOB OFFER Expert on climate change impacts on Danube Navigation in the Secretariat of the Danube Commission (BUDAPEST)

 

The Danube Commission (DC), an international organization based in Budapest, is announcing a vacancy for the position of Expert on climate change impacts on Danube Navigation.

The selection process will take place at the end of March 2023.

Main tasks:

  • Contributes, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, to projects, initiatives and studies regarding the impact of climate change on Danube navigation.
  • Contributes to topics relating to sustainable river engineering projects addressed in the Joint Statement process jointly implemented by the Danube Commission, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, the International Commission for the Sava River Basin and the European Commission/DG MOVE.
  • Contributes to projects, initiatives and studies regarding water balance evaluation, hydrodynamics studies of the navigable section of the Danube, impact assessment of hydraulic engineering measures, quantitative modelling of water balance and discharge conditions as well as hydrodynamics of Danube navigation.
  • Provides know-how and support to the national administrations of the Danube States in the above areas and interacts with the fleet operators in the Danube region on research and implementation activities.
  • Assists in the preparation and implementation of expert meetings on climate change and modernization of the Danube fleet in order to support the wider and accelerated use of alternative propulsion systems and climate neutral fuels, the electrification of navigation, to support the improvement of overall energy efficiency and drastic reduction of fuel consumption of vessels, allowing for the clean, climate-neutral and climate-resilient inland navigation vessels and comprehensive support for green fleet renewal that also contributes to modal shift.
  • Other tasks.

Requirements

  • University degree (Master or PhD) or equivalent diploma of technical high school in the fields of hydrodynamics – hydraulic engineering – hydro morphology.
  • Practical experience in the field of hydraulic engineering, especially in connection with the application of the European Union Water Framework Directive.
  • Knowledge of relevant EU initiatives and EU funding programmes as well as experience with relevant EU-funded projects.
  • Advanced IT knowledge and experience in working with common technical programmes.
  • Good command of one of the Commission’s official languages is required. Knowledge of other official languages as well as languages of the Danube countries is desirable.
  • Good command of written and spoken English is an asset in order to ensure integration into work at EU level and to be able to carry out coordination activities with Member States and the European Commission.

We offer you:

  • Employment contract duration: 3 years;
  • Date of employment: as soon as possible;
  • Official salary 3158 Euro per month;
  • Additional incentives set out in the relevant DC Regulations.
