{"id":16898,"date":"2026-09-10T10:08:01","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T08:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danubecommission.org\/dc\/?p=16898"},"modified":"2026-09-10T11:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T09:30:12","slug":"dc-secretariat-pianc-from-the-meeting-room-to-the-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.danubecommission.org\/dc\/en\/2026\/09\/10\/dc-secretariat-pianc-from-the-meeting-room-to-the-river\/","title":{"rendered":"DC Secretariat &#038; PIANC: From the meeting room to the river"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What does cooperation on the Danube look like in practice?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On <strong>8\u20139 September<\/strong>, the DC Secretariat hosted a meeting of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianc.org\/\">PIANC<\/a>\u2019s Inland Waterborne Navigation Commission<\/strong> <strong>(InCom)<\/strong> in Budapest for the first time, bringing together experts from <strong>Belgium, France, China, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Germany and other countries<\/strong>. PIANC \u2013 the <strong>World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure<\/strong> \u2013 is a global network of professionals sharing knowledge and developing technical guidance for sustainable waterborne transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first day was dedicated to site visits along the Danube. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduvizig.hu\/\"><strong>\u00c9DUVIZIG <\/strong><\/a>(the North Transdanubian Water Management Directorate) hosted participants at the <strong>Moson Danube Dam <\/strong>and lock. A representative from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.hu\/en\"><strong>BME<\/strong> <\/a>(Budapest University of Technology and Economics)\u00a0presented activities BME has done in the field of side-arm reconnection on the Danube River in the area of G\u00f6ny\u0171. Guests had a chance to see the Danube River during the extreme low waters, the <strong>Gy\u0151r-G\u00f6ny\u0171 public port<\/strong>, the sites of several side-arm reconnection projects, as well as <strong>\u00c9DUVIZIG\u2019s port<\/strong>. The field trip was a chance to see firsthand how the river works, where it faces challenges, and what it takes to address them during the extremely low waters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16903 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danubecommission.org\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/f87f6dfe-6923-4981-9c9b-c1b75d958135-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the second day, discussions continued in Budapest. The <strong>Director-General of the DC Secretariat, Mr. Seitz,<\/strong> gave an overview of the Danube Commission&#8217;s history, structure and current challenges, including the impact of attacks by the Russian army on Ukrainian Danube ports and the resulting consequences for transport and logistics across Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovf.hu\/\">OVF<\/a>, the National Directorate General for Water Management<\/strong>, also took part in the meeting and presented its structure and work, especially addressing the problems caused by <strong>exceptionally low water levels <\/strong>on the Danube River. <strong>Ms. Tak\u00e1csn\u00e9 T\u00f3th<\/strong> (Hungary) noted that the current discharges are almost 50% lower than the low navigable water levels, making them the lowest in history (since the beginning of systematic recordings).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16902 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danubecommission.org\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/853799a6-be3f-407d-9018-208fa8175c98-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"excursion on the boat\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chaired by <strong>Mr. <\/strong><strong>Philippe Rigo<\/strong> (Belgium) and facilitated by <strong>Ms. Jasna Muskatirovic <\/strong>(DC Secretariat), the meeting continued with discussions on the agenda, Joint Statement 2.0, as well as increasingly unpredictable water conditions, the impact of <strong>climate change<\/strong>, and the practical challenges for navigation and waterway management in different regions of the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16900 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danubecommission.org\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4582-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"working picture PIANC\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The DC Secretariat was pleased to host <strong>PIANC<\/strong> in Budapest and looks forward to more exchanges and cooperation in the future.
