JOB ANNOUNCEMENT COUNCILLOR FOR ISSUES RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NAVIGATION ON THE DANUBE

at the DANUBE COMMISSION

The Danube Commission (DC), an international organisation based in Budapest, announces that the position of “Councillor for Issues Related to the Development of Navigation on the Danube” will become vacant on 1 July 2026. The selection process will take place between September and December 2025.

Your responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, you will be part of the technical team supporting the Secretariat of the Danube Commission on key issues relating to the development of navigation on the Danube. Your tasks will include:

  • Identifying and removing administrative obstacles to shipping on the Danube.
  • Developing strategies and concepts to promote the development of navigation on the Danube.
  • Developing and implementing technical and economic projects to modernise and promote navigation on the Danube within the framework of EU programs and transregional cooperation.
  • Supporting the implementation of the Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas and other pollutant emissions from the Danube fleet.
  • Further development of the Danube Commission’s proposals on security in Danube navigation.
  • Developing concepts and participating in projects to improve training and further education in the field of Danube navigation and to ensure the supply of qualified personnel in Danube navigation.
  • Representing the Secretariat in technical and economic expert groups of the European Commission.
  • Other tasks of the Secretariat of the Danube Commission within its own sphere of activity and as instructed by the Director General and the Chief Engineer.

Our requirements:

  • University degree or diploma from a relevant university, preferably in the field of naval engineering, ship technology, ship operation technology.
  • Thorough knowledge of the technical and economic aspects of Danube navigation, including international issues.
  • Good command of written and spoken English and knowledge of one of the official languages of the Danube Commission obligatory.
  • High degree of teamwork, initiative and motivation.

We offer:

  • Work in an international team with the diplomatic privileges of an international organisation.
  • A monthly basic salary of at least €4,318 net.
  • Additional allowances, e.g. housing allowance and family allowance as specified in the Rules of Procedure of the Danube Commission.

The term of office runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2030 and may be extended for a further four years.
