PLATINA4Action: Promoting Smart, Green IWT

PLATINA4Action (January 2024 – December 2026) is an EU-funded initiative supporting the implementation of the current European inland navigation action plan NAIADES III, and preparing the next policy framework for Inland Waterway Transport (IWT). Building on the achievements of PLATINA3 (January 2021-March 2023), the project connects research, innovation and policymaking to help shift more cargo to Europe’s rivers and canals and accelerate the move towards zero-emission inland vessels by 2050.
To help achieve this objective, PLATINA4Action develops practical tools for the sector’s transformation: a Digital Twin to assess how policy measures affect emissions and traffic flows, a European labelling system to recognise environmentally friendly vessels, and a roadmap to support the deployment of zero-emission and smart technologies.
The Role of the Danube Commission
Within the consortium, the Danube Commission ensures that the specific realities and priorities of the Danube corridor are reflected in European policymaking. It also contributes to five of the six PLATINA4Action’s work packages by monitoring policy implementation (WP1), supporting the development of the European vessel labelling system from a regional perspective (WP3), bringing together stakeholders for technology deployment (WP 4), and organisation of the stakeholder events (WP 6). Furthermore, the Danube Commission will play a central role in representing the needs and requirements of the public and private stakeholders in the Danube region in WP 5 and WP6.
Beyond its technical contributions, the Danube Commission acts as a platform for cooperation. By hosting key stakeholder events — such as the Technology Transfer Workshop and the Second Stage Event in Budapest in November 2025 — it brings together policymakers, river administrations, industry and researchers to exchange knowledge and strengthen coordination across Europe.
